Birth of Mark Kelly, Neo-Progressive Rock Keyboardist

Mark Colbert Kelly, Irish keyboardist and a member of the neo-progressive rock band Marillion, is born in Dublin on April 9, 1961.

Kelly is raised in Ireland until he moves to England with his parents in 1969.

Kelly is an electronics student while performing part-time in the progressive/psychedelic band Chemical Alice, who releases their EP Curiouser and Curiouser in 1981. He is invited to join Marillion when they supported Chemical Alice, replacing founding keyboardist Brian Jelliman. His first performance with the band is at the Great Northern at Cambridge on December 1, 1981. He appears on every Marillion studio album. He also appears on John Wesley‘s album Under the Red and White Sky in 1994 and on Jump’s album Myth of Independence in 1995 on production and keyboards.

Kelly plays keyboards with Travis for their headlining set at the Isle of Wight Festival (June 10-12, 2005), and at T in the Park in 2005. He plays keyboards for Edison’s Children‘s new album In the Last Waking Moments…, featuring fellow Marillion member Pete Trewavas and Eric Blackwood, for the song “The ‘Other’ Other Dimension” as well as performing vocals with Steve Hogarth and Andy Ditchfield (DeeExpus) on the Edison’s Children track “The Awakening” in 2011.

Kelly is credited with inventing online crowdfunding to fund the recording of Marillion’s 2001 album Anoraknophobia, following a fan funded Marillion tour of the United States in 1997, and pioneers many of the ideas copied by other music artists since. He is made Co-CEO of the Featured Artists’ Coalition (FAC), an organization which represents the interests of music artists in the digital age. He stands down as a director of the FAC in 2018. From 2009 until 2020 he is an elected performer-director of Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL).

In 2016, Kelly is cast as a guest keyboardist in Ayreon‘s 2017 album The Source.

In September 2020, Kelly releases a single “Amelia” with his new solo band, Mark Kelly’s Marathon. The debut album is released in November 2020.

Birth of Damien Rice, Singer & Songwriter

damien-riceDamien Rice, Irish singer-songwriter, musician and record producer, is born in Dublin on December 7, 1973. He is raised in Celbridge, County Kildare and plays piano, guitar, percussion, and clarinet.

Rice forms the rock band Juniper along with Paul Noonan, Dominic Philips, David Geraghty and Brian Crosby in 1991. They meet while attending Salesian College Celbridge, a secondary school in Celbridge. After touring throughout Ireland, the band releases their debut EP Manna in 1995. They are signed to a six album deal with Polygram Records in 1997.

The band enjoys moderate success with a couple of single releases, but a projected album flounders because of record company politics. After achieving his musical goals with Juniper, Rice becomes frustrated with the artistic compromises required by the record label and he leaves the band in 1998. The remaining members of Juniper go on to become Bell X1.

After leaving the band Rice works as a farmer in Tuscany and busks throughout Europe before returning to Ireland in 2001 and beginning a solo musical career. He gives a demo recording to his second cousin, music producer David Arnold, who then gives Rice a mobile studio. Over the next year he continues to record his album and then embarks on a tour of Ireland with vocalist Lisa Hannigan, New York drummer Tom Osander, cellist Vyvienne Long, guitarist Mark Kelly and Dublin bassist Shane Fitzsimons.

In 2002 Rice’s debut album, O, reachs No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart and remains on the chart for 97 weeks. It also wins the Shortlist Music Prize and generates three top-30 singles in the UK. He releases his second album, 9, in 2006 and his songs have appeared in numerous films and television episodes. After eight years of various collaborations, he releases his third studio album My Favourite Faded Fantasy on October 31, 2014.

Rice’s personal activities include musical contributions to charitable projects such as the Songs for Tibet: The Art of Peace, the Enough Project and the Burma Campaign UK and the U.S. Campaign for Burma to free Burmese democracy movement leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Rice lives in Carlisle, England for many years before advancing on with his music career where he moves abroad.

Release of “Zooropa,” U2’s Eighth Studio Album

zooropaZooropa, the eighth studio album by Irish rock band U2, is released worldwide on July 5, 1993, except in North America which gets the album a day later. The album is produced by Flood, Brian Eno, and The Edge and released on Island Records.

Inspired by the band’s experiences on the Zoo TV Tour, Zooropa expands on many of the tour’s themes of technology and media oversaturation. The record is a continuation of the group’s experimentation with alternative rock, electronic dance music, and electronic sound effects that began with their previous album, Achtung Baby, in 1991.

U2 begins writing and recording Zooropa in Dublin in February 1993, during a six-month break between legs of the Zoo TV Tour. The record is originally intended as an EP to promote the “Zooropa” leg of the tour that is to begin in May 1993, but during the sessions, the group decides to extend the record to a full-length album. Pressed for time, U2 writes and records at a rapid pace, with songs originating from many sources, including leftover material from the Achtung Baby sessions. The album is not completed in time for the tour’s resumption, forcing the band to travel between Dublin and their tour destinations in May to complete mixing and recording.

Zooropa receives generally favourable reviews from critics. Despite none of its three singles —”Numb“, “Lemon“, and “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” — being hits consistently across regions, the record sells well upon release and peaks at number one in multiple countries. The album’s charting duration and lifetime sales of 7 million copies, however, are less than those of Achtung Baby. In 1994, Zooropa wins the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Although the record is a success and music journalists view it as one of the group’s most creative works, the band regards it with mixed feelings.

Continuing a campaign by U2 to reissue all of their records on vinyl, Zooropa is re-released on two 180-gram vinyl records on July 27, 2018. Remastered under The Edge’s direction, the reissue includes two remixes to commemorate the album’s 25th anniversary: “Lemon (The Perfecto Mix)” and “Numb (Gimme Some More Dignity Mix).”
