Funeral of Sister Theresa Egan

Irish soil is sprinkled over the casket of Sister Theresa Egan as more than 2,000 mourners attend her funeral on the tiny Caribbean island of Saint Lucia on January 7, 2001. The nun is brutally murdered while attending Mass on New Year’s Eve. She is described as a “cheerful and committed” woman by her colleagues.

Sister Egan, originally from Clonaslee, County Laois, trains as a nun at the order’s convent in Ferbane, County Offaly, and leaves Ireland in her early 20s. She spends the first 20 years on the missions, working for long periods in the West Indies, including Grenada.

Sister Egan lives in Saint Lucia for more than four decades, serving as a teacher and administrator at several Catholic schools. She comes from a religious family and seven of the nine children join orders. She is survived by three elderly sisters, all Presentation nuns, and at least one brother.

When the attack takes place Sister Egan, 73, is serving communion at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Castries. According to local police the attack is carried out by a group of men, dressed in traditional rastafarian clothes, who claim to be opposed to the island’s main churches.

Sister Egan is beaten to death after she tries to escape the attackers. One other person reportedly dies at the hospital after the attack. At least 12 are injured including another Irish nun, Sister Mel Kenny from Clonmacnoise, County Offaly.

Two men who identify themselves as Rastafarians are formally charged with murder and attempted murder among other offences.

Her funeral mass takes place in the same Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception where she died. At the front of the basilica, candles are arranged to spell out the words “sister” and “peace.” She is then buried on a hillside overlooking the capital, Castries, where the attack occurred.

The reasons for attack on the Castries cathedral are unknown and lead to much speculation in the Saint Lucian press. Initial reports say the two suspects tell police they are prophets sent by Haile Selassie, the late Ethiopian emperor worshiped as a god by Rastafarians, to combat corruption in the Catholic church. However Rastafarian leader Ras Bongo Isley says the attack is not the work of real rastafarians, since the movement “teaches love and peace.”

There are also reports that the men belong to an anti-Christian organisation, and that “satanic” symbols had been posted on the doors of Cathedral of Immaculate Conception and other churches a week before the attack. The accused, however, are said to deny any knowledge of the symbols.

I lived with Sr Theresa for a year when working in St Lucia as a volunteer teacher. She taught in a primary school, I taught in a secondary school. We went swimming together, she loved the sea as much as I. And she invited me to formally join the community of St. Joseph of Cluny, which she belonged to, as a novice before I finished my teaching contract. I declined, telling her I wanted to be a “real” nun, a Cistercian of the Strict Observance. She didn’t express any frustration with me, she just gently gave me a WORD of wisdom: “It’s easy to die young, the true merit though lies in carrying the cross into old age.”

After I learnt of her martyrdom I wrote this prayer:
Christ Jesus, spouse of the Church, through the intercession of your faithful servant and beloved Sr Theresa Egan, grant that my request for miraculous healing may be speedily answered.

Theresa served you faithfully for many years in the religious life as a sister of St. Joseph of Cluny earning the white rose of martyrdom through her patient suffering of trials and disappointments. At the last you crowned her loyalty with the red rose of martyrdom, fulfilling her desire to give you her all. Her heroic life and death manifest that virtue of charity to which her name sake also aspired. Grant that through responding to her intercession on our behalf she may be raised to the altars of your Church as a sweet, gentle witness of the depth and passion of your love for her and all religious. Amen.

I visit st. Lucia every year. I pass the cemetery on my way from the airport. I will never look at that place the same way again. What a tragedy. RIP Sister.

i lived in St.Lucia, just a 5 minute walk from the Cathedral in Pavee, where the perps lived just above me. I went to attend the 10:00am Mass only to discover a large crowd gathered outside the Cathdral. My neighbour was a fireman and he was the first to tell me of the incident as he drove up the pavee hill, and i walked down to attend Mass. The perps were part of a larger group who gathered together and planned the attack; only 2 mustered up the courage. They were reading a ‘devil book’ which stated that catholics were made of ‘plastic’, and had to be burned. I heard later from a woman who was present during the Mass; she said Sister Theresa was running outside and was knocked over the head with a 2×4, cracking her skull and knocking her down on the sidewalk just outside. There are other reports stating that she was ‘hacked’ with a machete, but these are rumours. The witness also told me that she was shocked at how many of the men just ran away terrified, leaving the others helpless and defenseless. The early 6:00am mass is attended by mostly elderly people. The celebrant, Fr Charles Gaillard, was a local man, and a late vocation priest. I clearly remember his sermons were the best of all the priests at the parish. He was flown to Martinique with severe burns, but was able to recover enough to quietly celebrate Mass once more, before dying on April 19, surviving only 17 weeks and dying of a ‘pulmonary embolism’. He had suffered a collapsed lung when burned, so never really survived the attack.
