Birth of Noreen Rice, Northern Irish Artist

Noreen Rice, Irish artist, is born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on February 19, 1936. She exhibits for fifty years and works in the United States, France and Switzerland. Her work is included in the United Nations collection.

Rice is born to Johnny Rice and his wife Nell (née Hayes). Her mother can sing, and her father is a master mason. Her mother’s singing brings in extra money after her father is posted overseas during World War II. She goes to Methodist College Belfast and by the age of fourteen is living in the family home with lodgers as her parents are in Africa where her father is working. She is not academic and takes only a passing interest in becoming a secretary. A school friend says that all she wants to do is draw.

The artist Gerard Dillon comes from Belfast. He helps Rice after they are introduced to each other by her piano teacher in 1951. He is friends with the painter George Campbell. They both share “an interest in bohemian characters.” She regards both Dillon and Campbell as her mentors for decades and her work is of a similar surrealistic and primitive style.

In 1956, Rice completes her first solo exhibition at the British Council in Hong Kong. She had been there since 1954 doing typing and practicing her painting. Her father is working there, and she stays in Hong Kong until the following year. When she returns, she earns money working night shifts in the BBC newsroom.

Gerard Dillon and his sister, Mollie, have a property on London‘s Abbey Road in 1958. They rent part of the house to artist Arthur Armstrong, and they rent a flat to Rice and her brother. Dillon and Rice would tour junk yards to find objects like leather and string that they include in their artwork. The house is known for its ex-pat Irish artists which also include Aidan Higgins and Gerry Keenan.

In 1963, Rice goes to the United States to exhibit, and she has to be persuaded to find time to meet President Kennedy. This is three weeks before he is killed in Dallas. In 1967, she is in Paris learning lithography and marries the German contemporary artist Haim Kern. Their child Tristran is born, and the marriage soon ends, and she leaves for Switzerland.

Rice marries again after she returns to Ireland to live in County Fermanagh. They have a daughter who is named Trasna. She exhibits twice in Belfast. In 1997, a large collaboration with Felix Anaut results in images of Adam and Eve which is prepared for a Spanish arts festival near Zaragoza. Another large commission is to decorate the shutters of Pushkin House at Baronscourt for Alexandra Hamilton, Duchess of Abercorn, in 2005.

Rice dies in County Monaghan on March 23, 2015, where she had lived for twenty years. She completes her last exhibition in 2009, over fifty years after her first in Hong Kong. She has exhibited and had her work in notable collections including the United Nations. She is noted for only creating art when she wanted to, she had never conformed, Aeneas Bonner says in her obituary “Normality was a not a close acquaintance.”

Birth of Anthony Cronin, Poet, Activist, Critic & Editor

Anthony Gerard Richard Cronin, Irish poet, arts activist, biographer, commentator, critic, editor and barrister, is born in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, on December 28, 1923.

After obtaining a B.A. from the National University of Ireland, Cronin enters the King’s Inns and is later called to the Bar.

Cronin is known as an arts activist as well as a writer. He is Cultural Adviser to Taoiseach Charles Haughey and briefly to Garret FitzGerald. He involves himself in initiatives such as Aosdána, the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Heritage Council. He is a founding member of Aosdána, and is a member of its governing body, the Toscaireacht, for many years. He is elected Saoi, a distinction for exceptional artistic achievement, in 2003. He is also a member of the governing bodies of the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Ireland, of which he is for a time Acting Chairman.

With Flann O’Brien, Patrick Kavanagh and Con Leventhal, Cronin celebrates the first Bloomsday in 1954. He contributes to many television programmes, including Flann O’Brien: Man of Parts (BBC) and Folio (RTÉ).

From 1966 to 1968 Cronin is a visiting lecturer at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana, and from 1968 to 1970 he is poet in residence at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He reads a selection of his poems for the Irish Poetry Reading Archive in 2015. He has honorary doctorates from several institutions, including the University of Dublin, the National University of Ireland and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland.

Cronin begins his literary career as a contributor to Envoy, A Review of Literature and Art. He is editor of The Bell in the 1950s and literary editor of Time and Tide (London). He writes a weekly column, “Viewpoint,” in The Irish Times from 1974 to 1980. Later he contributes a column on poetry to the Sunday Independent.

His first collection of poems, called simply Poems (Cresset Press, London), is published in 1958. Several collections follow and his Collected Poems (New Island Books, Dublin) is published in 2004. The End of the Modern World (New Island Books, 2016), written over several decades, is his final publication.

Cronin’s novel, The Life of Riley, is a satire on Bohemian life in Ireland in the mid-20th century, while his memoir Dead as Doornails addresses the same subject.

Cronin knows Samuel Beckett from when they do some work for the BBC during the 1950s and 1960s. He gives a prefatory talk to Patrick Magee‘s reading of The Unnamable on the BBC Third Programme. Beckett is not impressed, saying, “Cronin delivered his discourse… It was all right, not very exciting.” Cronin later publishes a biography of him, Samuel Beckett: The Last Modernist (1996), followed on from No Laughing Matter: The Life and Times of Flann O’Brien (1989).

In his later years, Cronin suffers from failing health, which prevents him from traveling abroad, thus limiting his dealings to local matters. He dies in Dublin on December 27, 2016, one day short of his 93rd birthday.

Cronin firstly marries Thérèse Campbell, from whom he separates in the mid-1980s. She dies in 1999. They have two daughters, Iseult and Sarah. Iseult is killed in a road accident in Spain. He secondly marries the writer Anne Haverty who, along with daughter Sarah, survives him.

Death of Maximilian Ulysses Browne, Austrian Military Officer

Maximilian Ulysses, Reichsgraf von Browne, Baron de Camus and Mountany, an Irish refugee, scion of the Wild Geese and an Austrian military officer, dies in Prague, Kingdom of Bohemia on June 26, 1757. He is one of the highest-ranking officers serving the Hapsburg Emperor during the middle of the 18th century and one of the most prominent Irish soldiers never to fight for Ireland.

Browne is born in Basel, Switzerland, the son of Count Ulysses von Browne (b. Limerick 1659) and his wife Annabella Fitzgerald, a daughter of the House of Desmond. Both families had been exiled from Ireland in the aftermath of the Nine Years’ War.

Browne’s early career is helped by family and marital connections. His father and his father’s brother, George (b. Limerick 1657), are created Counts of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Charles VI in 1716 after serving with distinction in the service of the Holy Roman Emperors. The brothers enjoy a lengthy, close friendship with John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, who is primarily responsible for their establishment in the Imperial Service of Austria. On his father’s death he becomes third Earl of Browne in the Jacobite peerage. His wife, Countess Marie Philippine von Martinitz, has valuable connections at court and his sister, Barbara (b. Limerick 1700), is married to Freiherr Francis Patrick O’Neillan, a Major General in the Austrian Service. So, by the age of 29 Browne is already colonel of an Austrian infantry regiment.

Browne justifies his early promotion in the field, and in the Italian campaign of 1734 he greatly distinguishes himself. In the Tirolese fighting of 1735, and in the Turkish war, he wins further distinction as a general officer.

Browne is a lieutenant field marshal in command of the Silesian garrisons when in 1740 Frederick II and the Prussian army overruns the province. His careful employment of such resources as he possesses materially hinders the king in his conquest and allows time for Austria to collect a field army. He is present at Mollwitz, where he receives a severe wound. His vehement opposition to all half-hearted measures brings him frequently into conflict with his superiors but contributes materially to the unusual energy displayed by the Austrian armies in 1742 and 1743.

In the following campaigns Browne exhibits the same qualities of generalship and the same impatience of control. In 1745 he serves under Count Traun and is promoted to the rank of Feldzeugmeister. In 1746 he is present in the Italian campaign and the battles of Piacenza and Rottofreddo. He and an advanced guard force their way across the Apennine Mountains and enter Genoa. He is thereafter placed in command of the invasion of France mounted in winter 1746-47, leading to the Siege of Antibes, but he is obliged to break off the invasion and return to Italy in February 1747 after Genoa rises in rebellion against the Austrian garrison he had left behind. In early 1747 he is appointed commander of all imperial forces in Italy, replacing Antoniotto Botta Adorno. At the end of the war, he is engaged in the negotiations on troop withdrawals from Italy, which leads to the convention of Nice on January 21, 1749. He becomes commander-in-chief in Bohemia in 1751, and field marshal two years later.

Browne is still in Bohemia when the Seven Years’ War opens with Frederick’s invasion of Saxony in 1756. His army, advancing to the relief of Pirna, is met, and, after a hard struggle, defeated by the king at the Battle of Lobositz, but he draws off in excellent order, and soon makes another attempt with a picked force to reach Pirna, by wild mountain tracks. He never spares himself, bivouacking in the snow with his men, and Thomas Carlyle records that private soldiers made rough shelters over him as he slept.

Brown actually reaches the Elbe at Bad Schandau, but as the Saxons are unable to break out, he retires, having succeeded, however, in delaying the development of Frederick’s operations for a whole campaign. In the campaign of 1757, he voluntarily serves under Prince Charles Alexander of Lorraine who is made commander-in-chief. On May 6 of that year, while leading a bayonet charge at the Battle of Prague, Browne, like Kurt Christoph, Graf von Schwerin, on the same day, meets his death. He is carried mortally wounded into Prague, and there dies on June 26, 1757.

The Battle of Löwenburg

Napoleon‘s Irish Legion fights at the battle of Löwenburg on August 21, 1813. This is the first occasion on which Napoleon is frustrated by the Trachenberg Plan, in which the Allies had agreed not to risk a battle against the emperor in person (War of Liberation).

On August 14, Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher prematurely crosses the armistice line in Silesia and begins to advance west. After briefly considering a move south to attack the Austrians in Bohemia, Napoleon decides to join his forces on the Bóbr and try and defeat Blücher.

By the evening of August 20 Blücher’s army is on the east bank of the Bóbr, facing Löwenberg (now Lwówek Śląski). On the opposite side of the river Michael Ney (III Corps), Jacques Lauriston (V Corps) and Jacques Macdonald (XI Corps) are spread out between Löwenberg and Bunzlau (modern Bolesławiec), a few miles to the north. Auguste de Marmont (VI Corps) and the Guard are approaching from the west, and Napoleon is at Lauban, where he puts in place attacks for a full-scale attack on the following day.

On the following day Napoleon is disappointed. The French capture Löwenberg without any problems and at noon V Corps crosses the Bóbr over the bridges in the town, followed by XI Corps. As they advance toward the heights on the east bank of the river, Blücher retreats. Yorck’s corps is pushed back along the road to Goldberg (Złotoryja, ten miles to the southwest of Legnica).

Further to the north III Corps and VI Corps cross the Bóbr at Bolesławiec pushed by General Fabian Gottlieb von der Osten-Sacken‘s Imperial Russian Army.

Napoleon misinterprets this move as demonstrating a lack of confidence amongst the Allied commanders, and that they had assumed the French would retreat without risking a battle so far east. Instead, it is part of a deliberate Allied plan – no individual Allied army is to risk a battle with the emperor in person.

On August 22 the French continue to push east, fighting a skirmish between Lauterseifen and Pilgramsdorf. Blücher retreats behind the Kaczawa. However, the French pursuit is halted by news from Dresden, where Claude Carra Saint-Cyr finds himself facing a considerable Austrian and Russian attack. As a result, Napoleon decides to return west to deal with the threat to Dresden, leaving Marshal Macdonald in command of a new Army of the Bóbr (III Corps, XI Corps and V Corps).

Over the next few days Napoleon wins the Battle of Dresden (August 26-27, 1813), his most impressive victory of the entire 1813 campaign, but at the same time Macdonald suffers a defeat on the Kaczawa on August 26, 1813, largely negating the results of that victory.
