Death of Matt Talbot

Matthew Talbot, an Irish ascetic revered by many Catholics for his piety, charity and mortification of the flesh, suddenly dies on a Dublin street on June 7, 1925. Though he has not yet been formally recognized as a saint, he has been declared Venerable and is considered a patron of those struggling with alcoholism. He is commemorated on 19 June.

Talbot is born on May 2, 1856, at 13 Aldborough Court, Dublin, the second eldest of twelve children of Charles and Elizabeth Talbot, a poor family in the North Strand area. He is baptized in St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral on May 5. His father and all but the oldest of his brothers is heavy drinkers. In 1868, he leaves school at the age of twelve and goes to work in a wine merchant’s store. He very soon begins “sampling their wares,” and is considered a hopeless alcoholic by age thirteen. He then goes to the Port & Docks Board where he works in the whiskey stores. He frequents pubs in the city with his brothers and friends, spending most or all of his wages and running up debts. When his wages are spent, he borrows and scrounges for money. He pawns his clothes and boots to get money for alcohol. On one occasion, he steals a fiddle from a street entertainer and sells it to buy drink.

One evening in 1884, 28-year-old Talbot, who is penniless and out of credit, waits outside a pub in the hope that somebody will invite him in for a drink. After several friends had passed him without offering to treat him, he goes home in disgust and announces to his mother that he is going to “take the pledge” (renounce drink). He goes to Holy Cross College, Clonliffe, where he takes the pledge for three months. At the end of the three months, he takes the pledge for six months, then for life.

Having drunk excessively for 16 years, Talbot maintains sobriety for the following forty years of his life. There is evidence that his first seven years after taking the pledge are especially difficult. He finds strength in prayer, begins to attend daily Mass, and reads religious books and pamphlets. He repays all his debts scrupulously. Having searched for the fiddler whose instrument he had stolen, and having failed to find him, he gives the money to the church to have Mass said for him.

Even when his drinking is at its worst, Talbot is a hard worker. When he joins Pembertons, the building contractors, as a hod-carrier, his work-rate is such that he is put first on the line of hodmen to set the pace. Later, in Martin’s timber yard, he takes on the meanest and hardest jobs. He is respectful to his bosses but not obsequious, and on occasion stands up for a fellow worker. On September 22, 1911, he joins the builder’s labourers branch of the Irish Transport and General Workers Union (ITGWU). When the Dublin Lockout of 1913 leads to sympathy strikes throughout the city, the men of Martin’s, including Talbot, come out. At first, he refuses his strike pay, saying that he had not earned it. Later he accepts it but asks that it be shared out among the other strikers. After his death a rumour is put about that he was a strike-breaker in 1913, but all the evidence contradicts this.

From being an indifferent Catholic in his drinking days, Talbot becomes increasingly devout. He lives a life of prayer, fasting, and service, trying to model himself on the sixth century Irish monks. He is guided for most of his life by Michael Hickey, Professor of Philosophy at Holy Cross College. Under Hickey’s guidance his reading becomes wider. He laboriously reads scripture, the lives of saints, the Confessions of Saint Augustine, and the writings of Francis de Sales and others. When he finds a part difficult to understand, he asks a priest to clarify it.

Hickey also gives Talbot a light chain, much like a clock chain, to wear as a form of penance. He becomes a Third Order Franciscan in 1890 and is a member of several other associations and sodalities. He is a generous man. Although poor himself, he gives unstintingly to neighbours and fellow workers, to charitable institutions and the Church. He eats very little. After his mother’s death in 1915, he lives in a small flat with very little furniture. He sleeps on a plank bed with a piece of timber for a pillow. He rises at 5:00 a.m. every day so as to attend Mass before work. At work, whenever he has spare time, he finds a quiet place to pray. He spends most of every evening on his knees. On Sundays he attends several Masses. He walks quickly, with his head down, so that he appears to be hurrying from one Mass to another.

Talbot is on his way to Mass on Trinity Sunday, June 7, 1925, when he collapses and dies of heart failure on Granby Lane in Dublin. Nobody at the scene is able to identify him. His body is taken to Jervis Street Hospital, where he is undressed, revealing the extent of his austerities. A chain had been wound around his waist, with more chains around an arm and a leg, and cords around the other arm and leg. The chains found on his body at death are not some extreme penitential regimes but a symbol of his devotion to Mary, Mother of God, that he wished to give himself to her totally as a slave. His story quickly filters through the community, and there are many spectators when his funeral takes place at Glasnevin Cemetery on June 11, 1925. In 1972, his remains are removed to a tomb in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Seán McDermott Street, Dublin, in the area where he spent his life.

As word of Talbot spreads, he rapidly becomes an icon for Ireland’s Catholic temperance movement, the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association. His story soon becomes known to the large Irish diaspora communities. Many addiction clinics, youth hostels and statues have been named after him throughout the world. One of Dublin’s main bridges is also named after him. A statue of Talbot is erected at Sir John Rogerson’s Quay in 1988. Pope John Paul II, as a young man, wrote a paper on him.

There is a small plaque in Granby Lane at the site of Talbot’s death. Prior to the current plaque on the Eastern side of the lane, a small brass cross was inlaid in a stone wall on the Western side of the lane.

In August 1971, Archbishop of Dublin John Charles McQuaid unveils a plaque to Talbot at a block of flats known as “Matt Talbot Court” due to it being on the same site as one of Talbot’s residences. President Éamon de Valera and Fine Gael leader Liam Cosgrave attend the ceremony.

Birth of Gerry Rafferty, Singer, Songwriter & Musician

Gerald Rafferty, Scottish singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer, is born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, on April 16, 1947. His solo hits in the late 1970s include “Baker Street,” “Right Down the Line” and “Night Owl,” as well as “Stuck in the Middle with You,” which is recorded with his band Stealers Wheel in 1973.

Rafferty is the third son of Irish miner and lorry driver Joseph Rafferty and his Scottish wife Mary Skeffington. His abusive alcoholic father dies when Gerry is only sixteen years old. He grows up in a council house on the town’s Glenburn estate and attends St. Mirin’s Academy. Inspired by his Scottish mother, who teaches him both Irish and Scottish folk songs, and the music of Bob Dylan and the Beatles, he starts writing his own material. In 1963 he leaves St. Mirin’s Academy and works in a butcher’s shop and as a civil service clerk while also playing with the local group Maverix on weekends.

In the mid-1960s Rafferty earns money busking on the London Underground. In 1966 he meets fellow musician Joe Egan and they are both members of the pop band the Fifth Column. In 1969 he becomes the third member of the folk-pop outfit the Humblebums, which also features comedian Billy Connolly and Tam Harvey. He and Connelly record two well-received albums on the Transatlantic Records label as a duo.

Rafferty releases his first solo album, Can I Have My Money Back?, in 1972. That same year he and Egan form the group Stealers Wheel. Stealers Wheel has a huge hit with the jaunty and witty song “Stuck in the Middle with You,” which peaks at #6 on the Billboard pop charts. Stealers Wheel has a lesser Top 40 hit with “Star” ten months later and eventually breaks up in 1975.

In 1978 Rafferty hits pay dirt with his second solo album, City to City, which soars to #1 on the Billboard album charts and sells over five million copies worldwide. The album also begets the hit song “Baker Street.” This haunting and poetic ballad is an international smash that goes to #2 in the United States, #3 in the United Kingdom, #1 in Australia, and #9 in the Netherlands.

Rafferty’s third album, Night Owl, likewise does well. Moreover, he has additional impressive chart successes with the songs “Right Down the Line,” “Home and Dry,” “Days Gone Down,” and “Get It Right Next Time.” Alas, a handful of albums he records throughout the 1980s and 1990s all prove to be commercial flops. He sings the vocal on the song “The Way It Always Starts” for the soundtrack of the movie Local Hero.

Rafferty is married to Carla Ventilla from 1970 to 1990. He records his last album, Another World, in 2000 and releases the compilation CD, Life Goes On, in 2009.

Rafferty has problems with alcoholism that directly contributes to his untimely death. In November 2010, he is admitted to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital where he is put on a life support machine and treated for multiple organ failure. After being taken off life support, he rallies for a short time, and doctors believe he might recover. He dies, however, of liver failure at the home of his daughter Martha in Stroud, Gloucestershire, on January 4, 2011.

A requiem mass is held for Rafferty at St. Mirin’s Cathedral in Paisley on January 21, 2011. The mass is streamed live over the Internet. Politicians in attendance are the First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond MSP, Wendy Alexander MSP, Hugh Henry MSP, and Robin Harper MSP. The musicians present include Craig and Charlie Reid of The Proclaimers, former bandmates Joe Egan and Rab Noakes, Barbara Dickson, and Graham Lyle. The eulogy is given by Rafferty’s longtime friend John Byrne. His remains are then cremated at the Woodside Crematorium in Paisley and his ashes scattered on Iona. He is survived by his daughter, granddaughter Celia, and brother Jim.

Birth of Damien Rice, Singer & Songwriter

Damien Rice, Irish singer-songwriter, musician and record producer, is born in Dublin on December 7, 1973. He is raised in Celbridge, County Kildare and plays piano, guitar, percussion, and clarinet.

Rice forms the rock band Juniper along with Paul Noonan, Dominic Philips, David Geraghty and Brian Crosby in 1991. They meet while attending Salesian College Celbridge, a secondary school in Celbridge. After touring throughout Ireland, the band releases their debut EP Manna in 1995. They are signed to a six album deal with Polygram Records in 1997.

The band enjoys moderate success with a couple of single releases, but a projected album flounders because of record company politics. After achieving his musical goals with Juniper, Rice becomes frustrated with the artistic compromises required by the record label and he leaves the band in 1998. The remaining members of Juniper go on to become Bell X1.

After leaving the band Rice works as a farmer in Tuscany and busks throughout Europe before returning to Ireland in 2001 and beginning a solo musical career. He gives a demo recording to his second cousin, music producer David Arnold, who then gives Rice a mobile studio. Over the next year he continues to record his album and then embarks on a tour of Ireland with vocalist Lisa Hannigan, New York drummer Tom Osander, cellist Vyvienne Long, guitarist Mark Kelly and Dublin bassist Shane Fitzsimons.

In 2002 Rice’s debut album, O, reachs No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart and remains on the chart for 97 weeks. It also wins the Shortlist Music Prize and generates three top-30 singles in the UK. He releases his second album, 9, in 2006 and his songs have appeared in numerous films and television episodes. After eight years of various collaborations, he releases his third studio album My Favourite Faded Fantasy on October 31, 2014.

Rice’s personal activities include musical contributions to charitable projects such as the Songs for Tibet: The Art of Peace, the Enough Project and the Burma Campaign UK and the U.S. Campaign for Burma to free Burmese democracy movement leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Rice lives in Carlisle, England for many years before advancing on with his music career where he moves abroad.

Death of John Kelly, United Irish Leader

John Kelly, also known as Kelly of Killanne, a leader of the Society of United Irishmen, is hanged along with seven other rebel leaders on Wexford bridge on June 22, 1798.

Kelly lives in the town of Killanne in the parish of Rathnure and is a United Irish leader who fights in the Irish Rebellion of 1798.

While Kelly is obviously well known to rebel and loyalist alike during the short duration of the Wexford Rebellion, almost nothing is known of him outside this time. He is one of the leaders of the rebel victory at the Battle of Three Rocks which leads to the capture of Wexford town but is later seriously wounded while leading a rebel column at the Battle of New Ross.

Kelly is under orders from the Wexford commander Bagenal Harvey to attack the British outposts around New Ross but on no account to attack the town itself.

The rebels outnumber the British forces, and so Harvey sends a messenger to give them an opportunity to surrender. The messenger is shot while carrying a white flag. This angers the rebels who begin the attack without receiving the official order from Harvey.

Kelly’s column of 800 men attacks and breaks through Ross’s “Three Bullet Gate” and proceeds into the town itself. After initial success, they are eventually beaten back by British troops and Kelly is wounded in the leg. He is moved to Wexford to recuperate but, after the fall of Wexford on June 21, he is dragged from his bed, tried and sentenced to death.

John Kelly is hanged on June 22, 1798, along with seven other rebel leaders on Wexford bridge, after which his body is decapitated, the trunk thrown into the River Slaney and the head kicked through the streets before being set on display on a spike.

Kelly’s exploits are commemorated in the famous Irish ballad Kelly the Boy From Killanne written by Patrick Joseph McCall (1861–1919). Don Partridge records a solo acoustic version of the song in 1964, and later regularly plays the song during street busking, before and after his hit records in the late 1960s.
